Mobile Phone Culture

You can tell what kind of person a person is by what kind of device he or she has. I don\’t know if this statement is true or not, but it is true that we can at least partially guess who owns the handset. Certainly one would not assume that someone with a $30M handset is poor. Nor would I say that someone with a $200 box from a second hand store is wealthy. At least that\’s the kind of distinction young people make. And in many cases, they are right. They\’ll hit it. I am not one of those people who can see from a distance what tools a person has and immediately dress them accordingly. Frankly, I don\’t consider myself such an expert, nor do I want to be. I only use my cell phone to make calls when I need something, otherwise it just lies around.

If someone is on the phone, I often don\’t even bother to get it out. I have a lot of books that I read from time to time, and I only take them when I travel. For example, in a doctor\’s waiting room, that\’s really great. But everyone has a toy box and watches movies there. It\’s small enough as it is, but to watch a movie in it? You can\’t really see anything. But it\’s true that it\’s a nice soundscape. Then there are the various games you can play on your cell phone alongside the movie, but according to the snark, the gaming giants are connected to the cell phone makers. It is possible and even plausible.

There is definitely some cooperation there. Another use for cell phones is to listen to music. I doubt there is anyone who does not have some music recorded on their device. I have a few CDs in mine, but that\’s because I don\’t want to listen to a radio full of commercials, which I don\’t like at all. These are fun aspects of cell phones, but they can also be used for work, like a calendar or task tracker. The calendar is excellent for letting me know what I\’m doing. It even remembers the birthdays of relatives and friends, which is utterly phenomenal. That is why the cell phone is a friend, a good helper and advisor, but a bad master.
